Our Mission is to produce "High Quality" Registered Rat Terrier dogs that are healthy, well adjusted, beautiful, and true to type; and to place them with new owners who can and will care for them and appreciate the great little breed of dogs they are.
We, at Rat Terriers West, take the responciability of breeding high quality Rat Terriers seriously. What does "high quality" mean to us? IT MEANS WORK. It means research and development. It means establishing breeding criteria and sticking with it. It means understanding what charteristics are truely important in the breed. It means understanding how to choose breeding dogs that can meet the criteria genetically as well as phenotypically. It means searching for and selecting foundation stock and assembling it, training it, testing it. It means breeding the best to the best. It means setting up health programs for the dogs. Working with vets. It means establishing daily work routiens. Socializing, feeding, training, grooming, medicating. It means we care.
We especially care about the health and well being of our dogs. Lets face it, uhealthy, un-sound, un-happy dogs can not produce healthy, happy, hardy, well adjusted pups. This is simply a fact. We love our dogs and take tremendous pride in their health, condition, well being, and soundness. It is not enough to us, to "just" produce puppies sucessfully. We want to sucessfully produce the type of dog it is a shear pleasure to own, we want to place those pups in the kind of home that suits a particular dogs's temperment, size, and make-up. We will not sell a puppy to a home that we feel it would not be suited to, not for any amount of money.
