Breeding standards and practices
With a few exceptions, we specialize in breeding the sort statured, stocky little UKCI  type "B" Rat Terriers (also known as  "Teddy Roosevelt Rat Terriers"). We select breeding dogs according to specific criteria which we have established and priortized over time. After a dog 1st meets our standards for conformational "type", we select,( in order of importance to us), for good temperment, for hunting ability, and for general hardiness. We also select for coat colors and patterns, but... only after all other criteria are present.
OUR SPECIFIC BREEDING CRITERIA
GENERAL BREEDING POLICIES
1) We never breed dogs which are not in tip top condition, we strive to keep our dogs fit. Each of our dogs get plenty of love and are exercised outdoors and worked daily, except in bad weather. We vacinate yearly and worm  and de-flea regularly

2)
We carfully consider each breeding well ahead of time, studing the pedgrees, conformation, temperments and hunting abilities of both dogs, pairing only those dogs which compliment each other in the most positive way. We breed only the best with the aim to produce the best.

3)
We do not breed dogs that fail to meet breed standards or which have serious breed faults.

4)
We do not breed females on every heat, we responcibly retire females from breeding when it is appropriate.

5)
We breed under strict confinement, insuring that the offspring are from the sire we choose.

6)
We keep strict records of breeding combinations, breeding dates, whelping dates etc. and fill out and send in registration information promptly.

7)
Expectant moms are introduced to sanitary, private whelping areas well ahead of birthing.

8)
Birthings are monitored and asisited if nessesary.

9)
Mothers are fed highest quality feed with suplemental calcium while nursing pups..
THE TYPE: The type "B" dog we  aim to produce is between 8 and 15 lbs., 10 to 14 inches at the shoulder, 14 to 19 inches long, strong and muscular, has a sturdy frame, with good bone in the leg.  We like a refined, rather than 'clunky", chisled look to the head, a flat crown between the ears. An expresive face that has a set of bright, well spaced,  eyes which radiate intellegence, a head with a muzzel that is neither long and 'snouty', nor short and 'snippy'. We prefer erect or tipped ears, and clear distinct coat colors.  We want the head size to be in a pleasing proportion to the body. We like natural bob tails but never breed bob tail to bob tail, this can lead to genetic problems.
THE TEMPERMENT: We like our dogs to be eager to please, obedient without trace of willfullness or stuborness, clever with out being sneaky and sly, active and alert with out being hyper , a dog that demonstrates intellegent caution, yet is not shy or fearful, one that is relatively quiet ... with out sacrificing being a good watchdog, that is: one which will bark at strangers, but is ready to settle down and be friendly to humans and other animals upon proper introduction.
We want a dog that is a good vermine hunter, with a "hot" nose, fast, keen, alert, inquisitive, with a will to work.
