Rat Terrier types
Basically there are two different Rat terrier body styles.  Different breed organizations refer to them in different ways.

The first  and most common type looks, more or less, "square" when viewed from the side. The distance from top of the shoulders (withers) to gound and from the top of the shoulders to tail head is equal or nearly equal. This  body conformation is consitered the classic "type A" Rat Terrier by UKCI and refered to as a "Rat Terrier" by UKC..

The second Rat Terrier type, UKCI "Type B", or the UKC  "Teddy Roosevelt Rat Terrier" is not as common as the "Type A", especially West of the Rockies. This type appears longer than tall when viewed from the side, with the perfect height to length ratio being 7 to 10. unlike type "A" which is easy to breed true to type, type B is more difficult to breed true to type.

There are various breed associations which register Rat Terriers, AKC, is planning on accepting the breed in Jan. of 2007. The stated breed standards for the Rat Terrier, of the multitude of breed clubs recognizing the Rat Terrier, do not all agree. (Which is a pain in the neck for Rat Terrier breeders). Because of this the following guide-line must be generic in nature. If you own breeding Rat Terriers, or plan to own them and breed them, I encourage you to become familular with the standards of the breed association your dogs are registered with, and to stick with them.

Regardless of type style, Rat Terriers come in three basic sizes with few exceptions.. " Standards" are (more or less) between 18 and 25 lbs.; "minitures" are (more or less) between, 10 and 18 lbs. and "toys" are 10 lbs. and under.  Some breed associations have a "Giant" class which is over 25 lbs. and some have a "tiny toy" or "tot" class which is under 4 lbs.; some breed associations limit the size of what can be registered as  a "rat terrier" by establishing specific minimum and maximum heights in their "brand " of Rat Terrier standard.
